TPiRecap: 28 June 2013 (Make-Good #4)

And here we go once again. After today, the next time we reconvene here at the Towers will be for the Fourth of July Special next Thursday, and after that it's Rerun City until mid-August. Stay tuned to this blog for updates as they become available.

For the moment, however, let's do this -- hoping as we do that things get much better than what we saw yesterday!

For the third time this week (don't you just love pre-emptions?), it's One Wrong Price:
  1. Kimco Mongoose 90 ATV (RW)
  2. Kate Spade designer accessories (AL)
  3. 30" natural gas barbecue cart (MA)

Normally the accessories would be too much of a wild card in this game for me to even consider it -- but even for a wild card, that price looks way too strange. Furthermore, the ATV price is correct, and I'm confident about the barbecue as well. I'd pick the accessories.

That price actually looks fairly decent, but so do several other options -- among them $24,160, $23,715, and $23,160. I'd cut and run here.

Stuart, for his part, agrees with me and keeps $5,277 in prizes...

SMART MOVE

After further consideration, I think I've figured out why Temptation has produced so few winners in the past several years -- most contestants, it seems, totally blow off the option to make any changes in the price. Either they've already decided to hold onto the gifts no matter what, or they just don't think it through enough to consider that the show is giving them the option of improving their chance to win the car. It has nothing to do with the difficulty factor of the game itself, or even its odds of winning (which, as I've made clear numerous times before, are identical to One Away), it's all in the attitudes players bring to the game when they're presented with it. But that's something that can be changed, at least in theory... and maybe the recent uptick in playings for Tempty is part of a re-education process? Impossible to say.

  2. Trip to Santa Fe, NM (3n, El Dorado Hotel & Spa, $150 dinner credit; MA)

Since the gut instinct will probably be that anything that stays within the state of California will be cheaper than something that leaves it... I'm gonna say these prices need to be switched.

This is actually not bad -- by Stacky standards. Before we go any further, let's do the math...

The first digit is either 1 or 2. We know this. If the first digit is 2, the second digit can only be 1 unless there's been a dramatic price increase in the Civic line in the last few weeks. And that would leave a choice of three digits for the hundreds column. Even if the first digit is 1, we can eliminate the 2 from contention for the thousands digit. This gives us an odds table that looks something like this:

Digit
Odds
1st
1:2
2nd
1:3
3rd
1:3

For total odds of 1:18, or 17-1 against finding the correct price, at worst. And at best, if the first digit is indeed 2, it becomes 1:3 (2-1 against) -- as good as Stacky can possibly get.

tl;dr: Anthony actually has a chance of winning this mess. Provided he doesn't let the Peanut Gallery panic him.

Again, so close to getting it right! Or as close as this cruel game will let you get anyway. If nothing else, it demonstrates that you can improve your odds considerably, as long as you don't bobble the GPs. Even so...
