TPiRecap: 31 December 2013

We're still trying to come down off the high we had yesterday, where we crowned not only the biggest winner in Price is Right history (if one doesn't take Million Dollar Spectaculars and other primetime specials into account), but also -- depending on whether you consider the 1978-1986 run of Tic Tac Dough as a daytime or a primetime series, since it could qualify as either one depending on your market -- the biggest winner in the history of daytime television, period. (If Tic Tac does qualify, then the legendary Thom McKee and his $312,700 final tally still trumps Sheree's $170,345 -- but Sheree would still lay claim to the biggest one-day haul in daytime history, since Thom's total was aquired over the course of several months.)

I also have to thank the commenters from yesterday for catching me in an error, when I had mistakenly marked yesterday's total haul of $290,399 as the highest in daytime Price history. That record still belongs to the Season 35 premiere, at $297,708. The error was due to a mental transposition of the latter number; in my haste, I had misread it as $279K, not $297K. I take full responsibility for that.

There are only two downsides to yesterday's bonanza. One, there's almost no possible way to follow that act and not come off as a disappointment. And two, with the budget now well and truly busted (Price gave away more loot yesterday than they do in a lot of weeks!), one can only wonder at how "evil" the game setups will have to be for at least a good chunk of the remainder of this season just to make the bean counters happy.

But that's a bridge we'll cross when and if we get there. For now, let's get on with what is now the official last show of 2013... which, due to my DVR mysteriously terminating the recording eleven minutes in, will be courtesy of CBS.com. I am tingling with joy over this. (I don't have the world's best relationship with the CBS.com webplayer. Let's leave it at that.)

Side by Sidee:
Trip to Berlin, Germany (6n, guided photography tour; RR)

Oddly, this game is played at its usual spot in front of Door #2, even though the trip was being displayed on the Plinko Plasma in the back. When they do this for Double Prices, the game is actually wheeled out to Home Base. I can only assume the electronics in Side by Side require it to be tethered to the power outlet in the door frame.

(Yes, I know there's no actual "temptation" element to Line em Up's gameplay. But the idea of the game is the same -- the digits in a collection of smaller prizes form the price of a car.)

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say $16,597. Strangely enough, so is she...

Okay, now I can say it: Curt Hennig would be pleased with how this day is going. 1 Right Price stays perfect, and so do we...

Could this be it, folks? Could this be, on the last day of 2013, the time Price scales that mountain they haven't scaled in a year and a half (or closer to four years, depending on your definition of "perfect show")?

We'll find out on the other side of this horizontal bar.

Meanwhile, pity poor Albert. With all this winning and hoopla happening aound him, all he's been able to do from the start is watch forlornly from Contestant's Row. Now he's one IUFB away from banishment to Leftover Island.

I'd hate to have to ship someone off to the Ohio River on a day like this, but I do have my duty...

Albert gets whisked off to the tarmac -- but we have bigger concerns here. Christina could be on the verge of sending us over the top here, with just one more win. Working in her favor is the fact we've already played -- and won -- our two car games, and when Mike goes for the "evil" setups it's almost always done in the car games. So as long as we don't see something like Pay the Rent in this slot, we're golden.

Fortunately, we go to the Turntable, which rules that out. Now the hurdle she has to overcome is considerably more surmountable -- it's Bullseye:
Now appearing on the Plinko Plasma, it's wusa9 news anchor Mike Hydeck to tell you all about this trip to the market his station serves, Washington, D.C. (6n, private Presidential tour, 1hr Patomac cruise; $6,845)

And so it comes down to one of the most inherently winnable games on the entire roster, to officially close the books on 2013 in the most winning of ways. I am so feeling this one, folks...

  • Vlasic squeezable relish
  • Snack Factory pretzel crisps
  • Snow's clam chowder
  • Immaculate blueberry scones
  • Hidden Valley Ranch dip mix

...and then they have to go and pull these GPs out of their rear end. Lovely.

LOL! No sooner does George finish his copy than the scones try to make a break for it! They just fall right off the table and start rolling over to the camera crew! "I had nothin' to do with that!" Drew insists. As if that weren't enough, the tube actually pops open when Drew and a crew member (sorry, I couldn't tell you who it was) try to reset the thing where it belongs.

Yeah, this is going on the gag reel for sure. ;^)

ANYhow... let's get serious here, this is for honor, glory, and one big fat plus in the record books.

Oh dear. Now it's all down to Lady Luck. I just hope the hidden Bullseye wasn't behind the dips, because that would be a really cheap way to end our perfect-show bid.

Let's start with the relish, and see if it's there...

Relish
SORRY

...nope.

That means, of course, it's all up to the clam chowder. If the Bullseye is there, we can claim our first bona fide perfect show since Valentine's Day 2010. (Remember, 2012's Wedding Shower Spectacular included a fudge win in Plinko, so it technically might not have counted in some of the more pedantic corners of fandom. This time, however, there'd be no doubt whatsoever about it.)

Now, being the good New England boy that I am, I do love me some clam chowder...

...and I'd love it even more if it gave us what we wanted to see...

...which is a Bullseye behind that black "$2.29" card...

...a card that Drew now pulls off...

...to reveal...

...that we have...

Relish
Soup
SORRY
BULLSEYE

Cue the dancing mikos!
Now THAT is how you wrap up a year! It's also about the only possible way we could have followed up yesterday's mega-episode without feeling like a letdown -- it's one of only two hills #6552K didn't quite get over (the other being, of course, a DSW).

Ohh, these last two days have felt GOOD after so many weeks of frustration and occasional futility! I feel cleansed now. Let the healing process begin...
