TPiRecap: 4 July 2012 (Fourth of July Season-Ending Spectacular)

And so it comes to this... The last (so far as I know) regularly-scheduled first-run episode of The Price is Right's landmark fourtieth season. And it's a holiday spectacular at that, so the prize budget will likely be appropriately augmented as well. If we're going out, we're going out with a bang... hopefully!

But before we fire up the grill and set off our quasi-legal backyard fireworks, a few housekeeping notes. I'm counting this as the third of a three-episode Week 40 for the purposes of my record books. (The previous two episodes aired on 17-18 June.) Full stats will be posted by this evening, along with an analysis of these numbers versus Season 39 -- and I think those of you who haven't been paying attention, or who subscribe to a simplistic view of this show's problems, might be in for a bit of a surprise.

I don't even know what the summertime schedule will be. I'll try to do a few TPiRetros if I get a chance, but no promises beyond that word "try." And of course, if there does happen to be something like a back-to-school special during the summer, I'll do some recapping of that, but it won't count towards the final stats for Season 40; after today, I close the books on the season, whether it's actually finished or not. (There shouldn't be any more make-goods, either. All Season 40 episodes are now accounted for, the aforementioned possibility of an additional special aside.)

Also before I begin, I need to address something regarding the future of this website... because the simple truth is, I don't know how much longer I'm going to be able to do this.

When I started recapping episodes at the end of January 2007, it was a lark based on something I've always wanted to do dating back to my days lurking on the old alt.tv.game-shows Usenet group in the mid-1990s. I figured I'd do it as a service to the GSN Message Board community just to follow the last six months of Bob Barker's tenure on the show (and you can say whatever you like about the man, but his retirement was a significant news event in the history of The Price is Right and worthy of special coverage). Now, five and a half years later, these recaps have graduated to their own blog with full TV-accurate text formatting, detailed weekly statistics, and even the occasional image macro.

The unfortunate element is, these things now take a considerable amount of time to put together. Even with shortcuts and templates to streamline the process, the average TPiRecap still takes between ninety minutes and two hours to properly assemble. Without getting too much into detail, it's getting harder for me to ensure I have that much free time in a day to be able to put one of these together with the quality you've come to expect -- and I'm just enough of a perfectionist to not want to give you guys anything less than the best I can offer.

However, this is not a notice of my imminent retirement... not yet at any rate. I fully intend to be back in September to kick off Season 41, and with luck continue with it through at least the end of the calendar year. But beyond that? That's what I have to make up my mind about, and I'll be doing some major thinking about this during the Priceless Summer between the closing credits today and the kickoff of the new season in roughly eight weeks' time (give or take). I'll be sure to let everyone know what my decision is, when I finally do make it.

Okay, that's enough keyboard diarrhea for one day... heck, it's enough for one month! On with the Independence Day festivities!

We've managed to get the vultures down from a smorgasboard to just a potential entrée, depending on whether Gus can get out of the Row -- and thus salvage some Army pride -- on this, the final one-bid of Season 40. Good news for Gus, however: He's got the advantage. Can he make the most of it?

That's two back-to-back aces! What is this, Wimbledon or something? (Not that I'm complaining, mind you...) And that's a turnaround if I ever saw one!

We started the season with Race Game perfection, and that's how we're ending it too! Granted this one was for approximately one-seventh the value of the season opener, but even so, I can dig that.

  1. Actually, we still have a back to school episode yet to air, so the season isn't over yet.

    1. It is as far as my statkeeping is concerned. Don't get me wrong, I'll still recap the back to school show when it airs (and there's also talk of a possible 40th anniversary special to air on or around the actual anniversary date), but their numbers won't be added to the total for Season 40. I'll treat them as standalone summer specials.

  2. We've seen the 40th Anniversary Special Commercial, with Drew telling how to be a part of the show.
