TPiRecap: 26 August 2011 (Make-Good #1)

Note: This recap may look slightly different than you're used to. That's because I suffered a bit of a computer calamity this week that, long story short, required me to remake my templates and such totally from scratch. I was going to update the templates a bit for Season 40 at any rate; this just stepped up my timetable.

Let's make a memory...

Episode #: 5521K

VTR date: 9 March 2011

Flip Flop:
5pc contemporary dining room group (Kate Spade dinnerware by Michael C. Fina) & TeleFlora flowers for 1 year (12 deliveries)

...Oh, come on, Mike! A generic prize with a random tack-on, and in a game where the price is relevant? This should be a Grocery Game package! On top of that, it's Flip Flop, a game that didn't exactly have a stellar Season 39 to begin with (7-23 record).

The only way this could be worse is if the options were a total coin flip.

...Thanks, Mike. I knew you wouldn't let me down. Sheesh, why don't ya just blindfold the contestant and have him walk to the board barefoot on hot coals while you're at it?!

Our new Rowbird needs a moment to fix her hair -- which is actually, it turns out, a wig -- before coming on down (or in her case, standing up and taking two steps to the Cranberry Podium). "Everyone flips their lid on The Price is Right," quippeth Dreweth. "Hope the next prize is bobby pins!"

At least we're vulture-free today...

Now....or Then:
Trip to Fiji (Air Pacific, 6n, helicopter tour; $7,850)

...Very odd. This trip is the sort of thing Flip Flop's been played for lately, while the dining room/flowers package we did see in Flip Flop is more suited to a GP game like this. It almost feels like someone transposed the two packages on the format sheet or something.

And on another note, today's Then date is June of 1986. I believe, but I don't have any data to back this up, that this is the longest time ever between the Now and Then dates.

  • X-14 mildew stain remover
  • Bubble Yum bubble gum
  • Aunt Nellie's pickled beets
  • King's Hawaiian sweet rolls
  • Creamette spaghetti
  • Diamond party picks

And CBS cut away to a press conference at this point. How dare that silly little insignificant hurricane screw up our all-important game show... [eyeroll]

CBS.com to the rescue...

Weirdness abounds. First, I got tripped up by that Bubble Yum myself; most gum these days, even sweetened stuff like that, is over a buck a pack now. Second, that X-14 I was convinced was an anachronism alert, and evidently I wasn't the only one. And third, Heli's assertion that "Nothing costs 99 cents anymore!" when picking the rolls fails to take into account she just saw a package of gum go for thirty cents less than that, not even thirty seconds ago! (I won't mention the four-Now-to-two-Then rule, since only us LFaTs are even aware such a rule exists.)

Memo to future contestants: THIS is how you play this game! Notice that Beth never stopped to check with the Peanut Gallery even once, and managed to get eight attempts during her 30 seconds, which is impressive in this game (and exactly half the possible configurations of the paddles). She also paid no attention to the clock as far as I could tell. The fact this resulted in a win off of a less-than-easy board setup is not coincidental. Mark this well!
