TPiRecap: 11 November 2011 (Fifth Annual Veterans' Day Salute to the Military)

Sorry about missing most of this week, folks. Lots of personal stuff going on. I'm back today, however, because there's no way I'd miss the annual Veteran's Day salute to our troops! It's quickly becoming one of my favorite episodes of the year.

As is my usual custom when doing one of these specials, I break protocol here by giving not only each contestant's full name when they Come On Down (apologies if my spelling is off on some of them), but also their rank and branch of service as well. Since I only provide first names 99% of the time, making an exception only for rare instances of two players sharing a name, this is my way to pay special tribute to the men and women who do their part for our country. All of us here at the Towers salute you guys!

Also, for those of you that like to keep track of how well your favorite branch of the service performed, I have an additional Leader Board supplement for just that.  Watch for it at the tail end of things.

Let's do this...

Episode #: 5705K
Airdate: 11 November 2011
VTR date: 24 October 2011
First Four: Sgt. Christopher Tucker (USMC), MSgt Mary Torrence (USAF), Cpt. Sidney Mendoza (Army), PO Donny Pipfer (Navy) (L-R)
Today's Models: Manuela Abreález, Amber Lancaster, Rachel Reynolds

A band of Drew's brother Marines -- by which I mean a literal band, of course -- are standing by on the Plinko Perch to play us into today's episode the John Phillip Sousa way. And yes, Drew gets a color guard standing by at Door #2 for his entrance.

As you may recall, one year ago today, we played Pay the Rent on the Veteran's Day Spectacular, and we actually got someone who would've won the game outright had he not gotten cold feet. Let's try 'er again today and see if we can improve on that at all:
  • Snyder's of Hanover pretzels
  • Anthony's bow tie pasta noodles
  • Kingsford charcoal
  • Kool-Aid drink mix (single envelope)
  • Pillsbury Funfetti vanilla cake frosting
  • French's yellow mustard

Drink mix

Charcoal

COURT MARTIALED

Solution:
Mailbox: Frosting = $2.49
1st Floor: Pretzels ($2.99) + Drink mix (29¢) = $3.18
2nd Floor: Pasta ($1.69) + Mustard ($1.99) = $3.68
Attic: Charcoal = $3.99

This actually wasn't even that evil, by Pay the Rent standards; as long as you knew the charcoal was the most expensive item and that the Kool-Aid was supposed to be added to something else, you actually had a decent chance of winning this thing. Of course, most people still haven't grasped the concept that putting the least expensive GP in the mailbox is suicide (to be fair, this does take seeing more than a few playings to fully understand)

Between the fact we saw Spelling Bee played earlier this week for a sub-$15K car and now this (which by definition must be below $16,667), somebody on the show's trying to save a little scratch by offering some cheapies. On the other hand, from the consumers' standpoint it's somewhat heartening to know that even in a bad economy, you can still buy a new car for a halfway decent MSRP.

...Hey, not bad! If Mike hadn't decided to break the Three-and-One Rule we've had going for a while he would've had all four picks. As it is, his three is more than most recent players have gotten. Let's see if he can make it pay dividends...

I was afraid of that... I figured it was either the $18K or $20K price tag, and when he started off with $20K and that wasn't it, I figured he wouldn't go anywhere near the lowball. Meh. And yet another unbeaten game falls.

I do still enjoy Five Price Tags, however.

Dead easy, unless you were one of those who continue hoping that one day the show will break the unwritten Never-First-in-Line rule in Pushy. Then it was more of a toss-up, since $9,871 was perfectly reasonable for a Harley. Furthermore, neither $8,290 nor $7,829 sounded like nearly enough from where I was sitting.

More greetings from Kuwait send us to commercial. I love these.

Showcases: Justin (true) top winner, Christopher runner-up. Interestingly enough, in the five years we've been doing these specials, we have yet to get the classic cross-branch feud in the Showcases -- no Army-Navy matchups. Alas.

Drew mentions that we always have really good Showcases for the military shows... and this year's version shouldn't disappoint either, right?

1. This is No Joke: We Can't Thank You Enough For Your Service!

2. Giving the VIP Treatment to Someone Truly Deserving of One!
  • Bonus: See the Hollywood premiere of "the other" Adam Sandler's latest, Jack and Jill
    • Features a Price is Right scene with the Drew Carey era making its cinematic debut
    • No, Adam doesn't get to go all Happy Gilmore on Drew, but there is a Wheelie (w/o Chopper Bunch) involved...
